HOLIDAY ACCOMODATION

We have a particular interest in Northland and the Bay of Islands, so will look at some services and places in this area.

Bookabach is a down-to-earth booking service for bach rentals. A full house being passed off as a bach in Parekura Bay, for example, is being advertised for non-smokers, up to six, with two bathrooms, two bedrooms, beach frontage, TV etc., and fresh linen, for $260 per night in summer (15th Dec. 6th Feb) and $120 per night from May to October (winter), and is already almost fully booked in September for the coming peak season. For owners, an annual subscription and single listing at Bookabach costs NZ$149 per year.

Holidayhomes has more listings, and offers, for example, a bach on hill above Waipiro Bay for $160 per night in Dec. Jan peak season, for up to 6 people, with additional people charged $30.00 per person (non-smokers, and children by negotiation). Note that in remote areas in rough country, it is not necessarily entirely safe for inexperienced or very young children to go wandering in a semi-wild landscape, so owners must take care that visitors unerstand the lie of the land to some extent, and understand their responsibilities.

Similar listing services are provided by Baches, Cottagestays, NZholidayhomes, Holidayhouses, and Kiwinests.

Property management for holiday baches and homes is offered locally by Propertymatters in Russell, Bay of Islands, and throughout New Zealand by Bachcare (established by bachowners with a clear philosophy for sharing homes...), Bluepenguin (specialising in private beach house rentals), and Home Let (with good inforamtion on the rights and obligations of landlords and tenants).

INTERPRETATION

Places can just be what they are, natural or social environments that exist without any special preparations being made for possible visitors.

Or places can be theatres for interpretation and display - recognised destinations that have been prepared to receive visitors.

Behind the scenes, a lot of work has been done in New Zealand to interpret destinations for local residents and also for visitors from many different countries.

For more information about such work, see www.interpretation.co.nz
